High Potential Individual (HPI)

The High Potential Individual route is a work route and provides a route for international graduates who have been awarded an overseas degree-level academic qualification that is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s or postgraduate degree. The qualification must have been awarded no more than 5 years before their application and be from a university that appears on the Global Universities List (GUL) which covers the date of award. The GUL is published annually on the GOV.UK website.

The High‑Potential Individual (HPI) visa offers talented graduates from world‑class universities a fast‑track route to work and live in the UK. It is designed for ambitious professionals who want to contribute their skills to the UK economy while experiencing life in a global hub.

The requirements are set out Appendix High Potential Individual of the Immigration Rules. The rules explain the requirements an applicant must meet and this guidance provides additional information on how to consider their application.

What is the HPI visa?

Introduced in 2020, the HPI visa allows recent graduates from eligible institutions to start a career in the UK without needing a sponsor. It is a points‑based route that focuses on academic excellence and potential, rather than a specific job offer.

Eligibility criteria

To qualify, applicants must meet a set of clear conditions. The main requirements are:

  • Hold a qualification from an eligible university (ranked in the top 50 globally by recognised rankings) awarded within the last 5 years.
  • Be aged 18 – 30 at the time of application.
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency at level B2 CEFR (or higher).
  • Have sufficient funds to support yourself (£1,270 for the first month, held for 90 days).
Key point: The HPI visa does not require a job offer, giving you flexibility to explore the UK job market before committing to an employer.

Application process

The application is completed online via the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal. The typical steps are:

  1. Create an account and fill in personal details.
  2. Enter your qualification information and upload the university’s official degree certificate.
  3. Provide proof of English language ability (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL).
  4. Submit the maintenance fund evidence (bank statement or sponsor letter).
  5. Pay the visa fee and the immigration health surcharge.
  6. Book and attend a biometric appointment at a visa‑application centre.

Supporting documents

A well‑organised document set reduces the risk of delays. Commonly required items include:

  • Valid passport (or travel document).
  • Official degree certificate and transcript from the eligible university.
  • English language test result (valid for 2 years).
  • Proof of funds (bank statements covering the required period).
  • Biometric enrolment confirmation.

Typical timeline

Once submitted, most HPI applications are processed within 8 weeks, although processing times can vary.
